15 Gifts You Won’t Find in Any Other Gift Guide
Credit: Zamurovic Brothers - Shutterstock

It’s that time of year again—when your search results are crowded with variations of “X Best Gift Ideas for Y”-style articles. And this seems like one of them, but it isn’t. Well, it is. But it isn’t.

Because when you’re looking for quick assistance from the algorithm regarding what to buy your vaguely intimidating boss or your brother-in-law whose politics you desperately want to remain a mystery, seeing the same ideas over and over again means you’re not likely to amaze anyone with your gift-giving skills. And because the algorithm is an emotionless god, you are likely to give someone the same gift they received from the six other people Googling “best gifts for co-worker I barely know except for that time we cried together in adjacent bathroom stalls.”

Finding a unique gift is important. You want your gift recipient to feel special, to feel like you put some thought into the gift. You want them to see your gift and think, ‘wow, they really get me!’ Or at least ‘huh, this was ... unexpected.’

Well, you’re in luck, because this is not your typical gift guide. This is a list of thoughtful, useful, and interesting gifts that have flown under the radar, and which won’t be found on most other lists. Probably.

A shirt from Void Merch

The Age of Formality is behind us, and thank goodness. The last vestiges of a time when you couldn’t be comfortable in your clothes for 24 hours a day ended when we all found ourselves trapped in our apartments for a few months and pantless Zoom meetings became the norm. The T-shirt is the new black—but you need the right shirt. And the shirts from Void Merch ($22–$36) are definitely different, and definitely a cut above. A few of our faves include:

A travel aerator

Do you know someone who loves (or has) to travel a lot, and who is also the sort of person who stares in horror as you decant your $10 Cabernet into a Flintstone’s jelly glass? Then this nifty device is for them.

The Aervana Travel Portable Electric Wine Aerator ($80) does just what it says on the tin: It quickly and easily aerates any bottle of wine, so next time your giftee is sitting in a hotel room with nothing but some Three Buck Chuck to get them through the night, at least that beverage will be easy to smooth out and open up.

A hot tub dome

Problem: Someone on your list loves their hot tub, but can’t use it when it’s snowing hard, or raining, or simply too cold. Solution: This ridiculous, amazing Hot Tub Solar Dome (about $1,500). It encapsulates the hot tub and anchors to the ground, instantly turning it into a little hot tub-slash-sauna. Now that hot tub-lover (phrasing, sorry) can enjoy soaking in their heated petri dish in any weather. It also makes the hot tub a little more energy-efficient, as it holds in the heat and slows evaporation, so it’s a win-win, really.

Toy^2 Connectors and wooden train tracks

Combining wooden train tracks and Duplo or Lego bricks, these ingenious connectors (prices vary) extend the life of old toys while allowing for endless hours of creativity. In fact, if the childless among you were to purchase some of these for yourself, no one would judge you. The connectors allow you to attach standard wooden train tracks to the toy bricks, making it easy to build complex train tracks. If the kids on your list have left their old bricks behind, it’s a great way to make them new again, and who hasn’t dreamed of building an epic set of train tracks throughout the house?

A Tesla Cyberquad

Do you have kids older than 8 on your list? Be the coolest parent or weird uncle ever known by giving them a Tesla Cyberquad ($1,900). Yes, it’s just as ugly as the legendarily ugly Cyber Truck, but makes up for it with an immense cool factor. It’s got a range of 15 miles and a top speed of 10 mph and instantly transforms any sizable backyard or acreage into an amazing land of adventure. And since it’s electric, there are no worries about keeping gasoline around the house to keep it going. Yeah, two grand isn’t exactly a reasonable Christmas gift, but think of the dividends you’ll receive in return for basically giving your kid Batman’s bike.

A Self-Inflating Spare Bed

When you become an adult and occupy your own apartment or house, people automatically want to come stay with you—even if you lack basic things like a spare bedroom or any place at all a human being should sleep. If you live in a small space and want to have guest accommodations, you know what a pain fold-outs couches, cots, and air mattresses are. This self-inflating bed ($277 twin—$400 king) comes as a compact piece of rolling luggage, then self-inflates into a bed, complete with stable framework. Then it self-uninflates. I may have just teared up a little.

An Entire House

Let’s stop kidding around: You want to really amaze the people on your list? Buy them an entire house. You can purchase house kits from places like Allwood Outlet that will supply everything you need to build structures ranging from tiny 60 square foot huts to fairly lavish 1,000 square foot cabins—plans, timber, and finishes. All your giftee needs is some land and a willingness to DIY an entire house. Sure, they’re not cheap—the adorable 174 square foot Allwood Somersby is about $8,000, and the 540 square foot Avalon will run you $40,000—but this list is for unique gifts, not cheap gifts, you skinflint.

A HULKMAN jump starter

If you know someone who owns a car, then they need this in their lives. As anyone who has ever had a battery die while driving late at night or in a rural area knows, getting a jump start isn’t always easy. You’re either waiting hours for AAA to respond, or you’re flagging down sketchy strangers on the side of the road. The HULKMAN jump starter is small and compact, so it’s easy enough to stash in a bag or the glove box when traveling, and if you keep it charged, it has the juice to get most any vehicle moving again.

Flexible drill Bit extensions

If you need to buy a gift for someone who is even remotely handy around their home, these flexible drill bit extenders will change their life. And that is not hyperbole: They will begin measuring their lives in terms of BD (before drill extenders) and AD (after drill extenders). These magical devices cost $5 and allow your drill to reach just about anywhere, even places where there isn’t room for the drill itself. Just be prepared for your giftee to walk around offering to drill things for you for a long time.

A Magic Puzzle Company puzzle

If you need a gift for a puzzler, choose a puzzle from The Magic Puzzle Company. Anyone who loves jigsaw puzzles gets bored after a while—even those monochrome 5,000 piece puzzles that threaten your sanity eventually get completed. The Magic Puzzle Company (started by a co-founder of Cards Against Humanity) solves for this by combining gorgeous art that tells a complex, surprisingly twisty story—and contains Easter Eggs that lead to a “twist ending” in the form of a magician-designed optical illusion. In other words, these are puzzles within puzzles, and perfect for the sort of recluse in your life who spends the entirety of January with a puzzle on the kitchen table.

A mini claw machine

This one is just fun. Sure, it’s for the kids on your gift list—but there are plenty of grown-ass adults who would love to fill this with snacks or mini booze bottles. Yes, it’s a miniature claw machine that will keep everyone entertained for many frustrating hours. The parenting applications shouldn’t be overlooked, either, as you can place anything in there that you think your kids should work a bit harder for, whether it’s cookies, toys, or their allowance. (There’s a great episode of Bluey built around this idea, you should watch it, and then watch the rest of Bluey). Plus, it’s an awesome addition to parties for any age group.

An interior design consult

We all have that long list of things we wouldn’t mind doing if it didn’t cost so much money or if someone else would do them for us, and a gift consult from Decorist ($299 per room) is probably on there—who wouldn’t want an actual, bona-fide interior designer to overhaul their home? The package includes a personal consultation, multiple design concepts geared towards their style and budget, and a detailed final design with floor plan so they can implement the ideas in their own time.

Touchscreen gloves

Modern problems need modern solutions: As the cold weather arrives, you will start to see miserable people peeling off their winter gloves in order to tap at their phone screens in the middle of a blistering blizzard. Why touchscreen winter gloves like the ones from Timberland ($12) aren’t issued to all by governments and schools is a mystery, frankly, because no other gift will have as much of an impact on someone’s quality of life.

An under-desk foot hammock

Yes, you don’t see the phrase “foot hammock” too often—but maybe you should. Everyone has been forced to create a home office whether they wanted to or not, which has a lot of us working in some non-ideal spaces. And whether you’re in an office or working from home, sitting all day takes a toll. While most solutions focus on lumbar support, having someplace to rest your feet is crucial—and this under-the-desk foot hammock ($33) will relieve stress on your back and make sitting at your desk a little more comfortable.

A smart mug that keeps your coffee hot

It happens every day: You make a perfect cup of coffee in the home you’ve transformed into a perfect little office space, and then the torrent of notifications begins. An hour later, you glance over and realize you’ve once again allowed your delicious coffee to go cold. Give those on your list the gift of hot coffee with the Ember Mug² ($99), which keeps your coffee (or other hot drinks) at the ideal temperature for up to 90 minutes, keeping you up to date on its status via a “smart LED.” Never microwave the same cup of coffee four times again!
