Updated 5/24: Samsung has extended the data transfer deadlines for Samsung Cloud users. We’ve updated the article below with the new cutoff dates and added extra information on syncing Samsung Cloud with OneDrive.
The Samsung Cloud storage service is on its way out. The shutdown is happening in phases depending on where you live, but Samsung recently extended the deadlines for all “Group 1" regions, which includes the U.S., Australia, the UK, and most of Europe. Group 1 users now have until July 30 to directly sync their Samsung Cloud data with Microsoft OneDrive for free, without needing to download it to another device first.
How to back up Samsung Cloud data to OneDrive
Users can migrate their Samsung Cloud data to OneDrive using the Gallery, My Files, or Samsung Cloud apps on their smartphone. The process is simple to start, but the full transfer will take longer if you have lots of Samsung Cloud data to move.
Note that moving your Samsung Cloud data to OneDrive is free, but some users may have to pay for expanded storage after 12 months. Microsoft normally offers just 5GB of free storage space, but Samsung Cloud users get free bonus storage for 12 months to ensure all their content makes the move. You’ll need to bring your total data stored under 5GBs before the free extra storage expires if you don’t want to pay.
The good news is, OneDrive plans are pretty affordable, starting at just $2 a month for 100GBs, so it won’t be expensive if you decide you can’t get your data below 5GBs.
How to back up Samsung Cloud data without OneDrive
If you miss the opportunity to migrate your Samsung Cloud files to OneDrive—or don’t want to use OneDrive at all—you can still download your data to a PC, Samsung phone, or tablet until Sept. 29. Just make sure you download your data by then, as Samsung will begin to delete Group 1 data starting on Sept. 30.
Save your Samsung Cloud data to your mobile device
Open the Samsung Cloud app and tap “Download my data.” Select the files you want to download then tap “Download.”
Open the Samsung Gallery app, tap the three-dot “More” icon, then go to Settings > Download content from cloud. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the download.
Download progress is tracked in the notification bar. Note that you will need enough space on your device to store the entire download size. Also make sure not to cancel the download early, as it removes all downloaded files and you will need to restart the process.
Download Samsung Cloud data to your PC
Your other option is to download your Samsung Cloud data to your PC. This is a good choice for users with too much data to store on their phone, since PC hard drives are much larger, and you can easily move your downloaded files later to a USB storage device or another cloud service like Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud. You can access your files from the Samsung Cloud website, or by installing the Samsung Gallery Windows 10 app and going to Settings > Samsung Cloud.
