How to Unclog a Drain Without Calling a Plumber

As long as there has been indoor running water, there have been clogged drains. But what do you do when your drain is backed up? Call a plumber right away? Pour chemicals? Well there are some simple fixes to try yourself before resorting to the nuclear option. (Disclaimer: Do you not try to blow up your pipes.)

First clear your drain of any obstructions that you could easily remove with your hands, then pour hot water slowly down the drain. Many clogs are grease-based, so the heat will melt the grease and break up whatever might be stuck inside.

If that doesn’t work, then there are a few handy gadgets to try. A sink plunger will use an air pocket to push the clog along the pipes, and a pipe snake (or brand name “Zip-It”) has little barbs to hook hairs and pull them out.

Finally, get your hands on a hand-cranked drain auger. This has a long hose and will forcefully push the clog through. As a DIY solution, you could straighten out a wire hanger and try yourself for the same pushing effect.
