IKEA, that beloved Swedish purveyor of flatpack furniture and lingonberry jam, is in some hot water. Not, not for the traces of horse DNA found in their meatballs (not this time, anyway)—no, it’s due to a class-action lawsuit that found them liable for violating the privacy of potentially millions of customers over the course of two years.

IKEA was sued for printing receipts with that included just enough payment card digits to violate a federal privacy law. According to the settlement, IKEA violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing more than the last five digits of payment card numbers on electronically printed receipts—between 2017 and 2019, the retailer printed the first six and last four of card numbers, potentially putting many customers’ credit information at risk. In the settlement, they agreed to pay $24.25 million to the pool of affected customers, which probably includes you.

Who qualifies for the IKEA settlement?

If you used a debit or credit card in any IKEA retail store between Oct. 18, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2019 and received an electronically printed receipt (which is all of their receipts) displaying the first six and last four digits of the payment card number, then you’re eligible to be a class member.

While you do not need to submit proof of a receipt, the claims administrator will check the written information you provide on the claim form with transaction data from IKEA. If the information does not match, you will not be included as a class member.

Some people have already received an email or postcard about the settlement. This means IKEA already indicated that you may be a member of the Settlement Class, per their records.

The deadline to apply for the claim is May 4, 2023.

How much can I get for the settlement?

According to the settlement, the $24.25 million will be split equally between all those who have a valid claim. They expect a 5% to 10% of those affected to file a claim, which would put class members in the running to receive between $30 and $60 for their troubles.
