The Best Hurricane Tips From Real Floridians

As if 2020 couldn’t get any worse, we may be seeing more powerful hurricanes making landfall this year. Since these storms could be hitting some otherwise storm-free areas, here is some advice from our staff storm experts: Floridians.

As a native Floridian myself, I have been through countless hurricanes, tropical storms, and tropical depressions. Now that I live in New York, I am always shocked by the number of people who rush to the butcher shop before a big storm. (Don’t buy raw meat! It’ll go bad if you lose power! You northeastern fools!)

The main concept to remember is that you may be without electricity, wifi, or potable water for days or weeks after the storm, so be sure to get some cash, batteries, bottled water, and canned food (with a manual can opener).

You also want to make sure nothing outside your house can become a high-speed projectile in the wind, so bring all patio furniture inside, cover your windows, and throw heavy things in the pool if you have one.

Then all you need is some books, flashlights, and a blanket fort to ride out the worst of it. For all these tips and more, check out the video above.
